Common Questions About Hypnosis
WHAT IS HYPNOSIS?
Hypnosis is a process by which the Subconscious Mind is accessed to alter behavior that we are not successful in changing using just the Conscious Mind.
How many times do we say that we want to change some habit such as Stopping Smoking or Losing Weight and no matter how much we are determined to do so, we wind up not accomplishing our goal or only making a temporary change.
The Subconscious Mind occupies approximately 88% of our mind while Conscious Mind is in charge of the 12% left over. We are on the losing team if we rely solely on our Conscious Mind and will power to do the work for us.
In the expanse of the Subconscious Mind we have stored Associations and Identifications that we have accumulated over our lifetime. Some of these have positive connotations and some negative ones. And some that came in as a positive may not be so anymore. We had to protect ourselves at one time perhaps and learned a behavior to allow us to do so but now it may not serve us.
Through Hypnosis we create a pathway between the Conscious Mind that wants to achieve a particular thing, and the Subconscious Mind that basically holds the cards. We cajole the Subconscious to allow new positive patterns to override those outdated Negative patterns that run our lives that we no longer want and create new Positive Knowns.
WHAT WILL HYPNOSIS FEEL LIKE?
Hypnosis creates a very relaxed state. The Subconscious Mind stays alert and open to the process and your Physical Body gets to let go of tension and take a mini vacation!
You will always be able to get up and move around if you choose to do so. You will never do anything that you don’t want to do. You will be in a Hypnotic Sleep but not actually asleep.
The words and phrases I will use in the Positive Suggestions actually come from you and what you have expressed in the cognitive part of the session as this is what your Subconscious Mind more readily accepts and relates to. Each time we get together there will be different techniques used depending on what is being focused on in that session. There will be a variety of techniques used in Hypnosis including Visualizations, Imagery, Journeys and many others all with the purpose of shifting the old Knowns and Associations and Identifications to new Positive ones.
When you awaken from the Hypnotic sleep you will feel as if you've perhaps had a nap. You feel refreshed and may even have a smile on your face.
HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE TO ACHIEVE MY GOALS?
As each person is an individual and each issue has different histories there is no finite answer. Hypnosis and the Hypnotherapist can’t do it FOR you. It is a co-creative process. There may even be homework for you to do!
As an example, if someone is highly motivated to Stop Smoking then it may only take 2-4 sessions. They may even find that their desire for Smoking ceases after the first session.
In general there will be a series of sessions to create the Behavioral Change desired. Sometimes a client comes in with a Presenting Issue and as we work on that other concerns and issues may surface. The length of time that we will meet is fluid and we will together monitor the progress.
